Gamer Identity and Addiction-Related Nostalgia as Barriers to Gaming Disorder Recovery
This study of 877 individuals in recovery from gaming disorder found that continued identification as a gamer strengthens nostalgic longing for gaming's perceived psychological benefits, which undermines recovery through increased loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Abstinent individuals showed better recovery motivation than those attempting reduced gaming, suggesting that complete disidentification from the gamer role may facilitate sustained recovery.
