Behavioral Addictions in Latin American Adolescents: Prevalence, Mental Health Comorbidities, and Care Gaps

This narrative review synthesizes evidence on behavioral addictions (internet addiction, gaming disorder, problematic smartphone/social media use) in Latin American adolescents aged 10-19, finding prevalence estimates ranging from 10.6% to 54.9% with significant associations to ADHD, depression, anxiety, and suicidality. The review identifies critical gaps including lack of validated regional instruments, limited evidence-based interventions, and insufficient specialist workforce capacity in the region.
