Life after hospital: Community reintegration experiences of people with traumatic spinal cord injury in Rwanda

A qualitative study of 19 spinal cord injury survivors in Rwanda identified facilitators (personal resilience, family support, insurance, peer counseling) and barriers (inaccessible infrastructure, inadequate assistive devices, social stigma) to community reintegration. The research provides evidence-based insights for designing support strategies tailored to resource-constrained African healthcare contexts.

Home-Based Transcutaneous Spinal Stimulation Safety and Feasibility in Incomplete Tetraplegia

A feasibility study evaluated the safety of home-based transcutaneous spinal stimulation combined with blood flow restriction electrical stimulation in six males with chronic incomplete tetraplegia over 20 weeks, with cardiovascular monitoring via telehealth. The intervention showed high adherence rates with no adverse events reported, though caregiver availability was a significant enrollment barrier.

Validation of the Holmlund-Grooten Submaximal Arm Crank Ergometer Test for Estimating Peak Oxygen Uptake in Wheelchair Users with Spinal Cord Injury

A cross-sectional study validated a new submaximal exercise test for predicting peak oxygen consumption in 63 wheelchair users with motor-complete spinal cord injury, using heart rate, power output, sex, and injury level as predictors. The test demonstrated excellent criterion validity (ICC=0.88) with low measurement error and no adverse events, providing clinicians with a practical tool for fitness assessment in this population.

Innovative Assistive Technologies for Tetraplegia: A Narrative Review of Systematic and Emerging Evidence

This narrative review synthesizes recent systematic evidence on assistive technologies for tetraplegia across four domains: neural/regenerative interfaces, motor/biomechanical systems, digital rehabilitation, and psychosocial frameworks. The review identifies shifts toward personalized and adaptive systems using neurotechnologies and AI, while highlighting persistent gaps in outcome standardization, longitudinal evidence, system interoperability, and equitable access.

Ultrasound-guided Botulinum Toxin Injection for Intractable Abdominal Spasms in Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report

A 43-year-old patient with C4 tetraplegia experienced severe, treatment-resistant spasms of the rectus abdominis muscle that failed high-dose oral baclofen therapy. Ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin injection into the affected abdominal muscle resulted in significant reduction in spasm frequency and severity, with improved comfort and quality of life, suggesting this targeted approach may be a safe alternative for focal abdominal spasticity in selected spinal cord injury patients.
