Reliability of five-minute versus one-hour heart rate variability metrics in individuals with spinal cord injury

This study evaluated the test-retest reliability of heart rate variability (HRV) measurements in 37 people with spinal cord injury, comparing 5-minute and 1-hour recordings taken in a supine position. Results showed that 1-hour recordings provided better reliability across multiple HRV parameters (intraclass correlations 0.13-0.71) compared to 5-minute recordings, with participants with tetraplegia demonstrating lower overall reliability.

Early Diagnosis of Late-Onset Neuropathic Pain in an Elderly Incomplete Tetraplegic Patient: A Charcot Spinal Arthropathy Case Report

This case report describes an 83-year-old tetraplegic man diagnosed with Charcot spinal arthropathy (neuropathic joint degeneration) after 3 years, earlier than typical presentations which average 17+ years after neurological injury. The condition results from impaired proprioception and sensation in the spine following central/peripheral nervous system damage, leading to progressive vertebral joint degeneration and instability.

Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Limitations of Single-Treatment Approaches and Need for Combined Therapeutic Strategies

This review examines decades of experimental and clinical research on traumatic spinal cord injury, concluding that single-treatment interventions (medications, growth factors, cell transplants) have produced only modest clinical improvements despite significant animal model results. The authors argue that effective rehabilitation requires moving beyond isolated therapeutic approaches to explore combined strategies targeting multiple secondary injury mechanisms.

Perceived Benefits of Spinal Cord Rehabilitation in Low-Middle Income Countries: A Qualitative Study

This qualitative study assessed 16 participants with chronic motor-incomplete tetraplegia enrolled in a 24-week rehabilitation pilot RCT in South Africa, comparing robotic locomotor training with standard activity-based training. Participants reported improvements in functional independence, reduced secondary complications, and enhanced psychosocial well-being, highlighting the importance of patient-centered approaches in SCI rehabilitation.

Functional Priorities of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury: A Saudi Arabian Perspective

This study surveyed 101 Saudi Arabian adults with spinal cord injury to identify which bodily functions they considered most important for improving quality of life. Walking was ranked as the top priority (26.7%), followed by hand/arm function (20.8%), while sexual function was least prioritized (39.6%), with priorities varying significantly by injury type and completeness.
