Antidepressant Use in Pregnancy: Assessing Knowledge and Practices Among GPs and Midwives
A New Zealand survey of 119 GPs and 62 midwives revealed significant variability in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding SSRI use during pregnancy, with midwives reporting greater discomfort (36% vs 11%) in managing perinatal depression. Clinical management recommendations varied considerably across respondents, and patient counseling and written information provision were frequently inadequate despite guidelines supporting SSRIs as first-line treatment when psychosocial interventions fail.
