Autonomic Cardiovascular Control, Psychological Well-Being, and Cognitive Performance in Spinal Cord Injury

This cross-sectional study of 52 people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and 42 uninjured controls examined relationships between cardiovascular autonomic nervous system function, psychological well-being, and cognitive performance. Participants with SCI showed significantly impaired cognitive performance on the PASAT task, altered cardiovascular responses, and self-reported anxiety levels correlated with cognitive scores, though ANS responses alone did not predict performance.

Adherence and perceptions of a home sports video gaming program in persons with spinal cord injuries: A pilot study

This pilot study evaluated 14 individuals with chronic spinal cord injury using home-based Wii sports video-gaming for 8 weeks to assess feasibility, adherence, and effects on upper extremity function. Mean adherence was 85% in the first month declining to 69% in the second month, with minimal significant changes in measured physical outcomes but generally positive participant perceptions of the program.

Seasonal Heat Effects and Thermal Discomfort in Spinal Cord Injury: A Self-Report Study

This cross-sectional survey compares how individuals with tetraplegia, paraplegia, and non-injured controls experience warm seasonal temperatures, examining thermal regulation challenges and activity limitations. Results show that persons with tetraplegia experience significantly greater heat-related difficulties, including prolonged cooling times, outdoor activity restrictions, and greater reliance on cooling devices compared to other groups.

Reliability of five-minute versus one-hour heart rate variability metrics in individuals with spinal cord injury

This study evaluated the test-retest reliability of heart rate variability (HRV) measurements in 37 people with spinal cord injury, comparing 5-minute and 1-hour recordings taken in a supine position. Results showed that 1-hour recordings provided better reliability across multiple HRV parameters (intraclass correlations 0.13-0.71) compared to 5-minute recordings, with participants with tetraplegia demonstrating lower overall reliability.
