Predictors of upper limb function in patients with cervical tetraplegia

This study identified prognostic factors for upper limb motor recovery in 190 patients with chronic cervical spinal cord injury using standardized neurological assessment (ASIA classification) and functional testing (Van Lushot Test). Linear discriminant analysis evaluated 10 potential predictors to determine functional outcome thresholds, providing clinicians with evidence-based rehabilitation potential estimates for tetraplegic patients.

Defining Abnormal Prostate-Specific Antigen Values for Prostate Cancer Screening in Spinal Cord Injury Patients

This study analyzed nearly 35,000 male veterans with spinal cord injury to establish age-adjusted PSA reference ranges for prostate cancer screening, accounting for factors like chronic urinary tract inflammation and hypogonadism that affect PSA levels in this population. The findings provide clinically relevant PSA threshold values specific to SCI patients, which differ from standard reference ranges used in the general population.

P2X7 receptor antagonism with Brilliant Blue G promotes functional recovery in spontaneous canine spinal cord injury: a preliminary study in a large animal model

This preliminary study investigates P2X7 receptor antagonism using Brilliant Blue G in naturally occurring canine spinal cord injury as a large animal model. The research demonstrates potential functional recovery benefits through modulation of inflammatory pathways, though findings are early-stage and require further validation.

Lived experiences, challenges and coping strategies of patients with spinal cord injury using intermittent catheterisation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: a qualitative study

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the daily experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms of Arab male patients with spinal cord injury who use intermittent catheterization for bladder management. Three main themes emerged: frequent use of IC in daily life (including frequency, environmental challenges, privacy concerns, and fluid management), cleanliness and general care (catheter cleaning and incontinence management), and body image and sexuality concerns.

Challenges in Diagnosis and Management of Spondylodiscitis of L5/S1 Due to Propionibacterium acnes in a Patient with Tetraplegia

A 44-year-old tetraplegic patient with increased muscle spasms despite baclofen pump therapy was diagnosed with spinal infection (spondylodiscitis) at L5/S1 caused by Propionibacterium acnes. Diagnosis required PET imaging and guided bone biopsy; the patient was successfully treated with 8 weeks of intravenous antibiotics managed at home with community nursing support.
