Subtle white matter intensity changes on FLAIR imaging in patients with ischemic stroke

This cross-sectional study of 100 acute ischemic stroke patients examined whether signal intensity in normal-appearing white matter on FLAIR MRI correlates with leukoaraiosis burden. Results showed that white matter signal intensity increased near leukoaraiosis borders and was independently associated with leukoaraiosis volume, suggesting structural abnormalities extend into apparently normal brain tissue.

Soluble Suppression of Tumorigenicity 2 as a Biomarker for Atrial Fibrillation Detected After Stroke: A Retrospective Clinical Study

This retrospective study of 970 stroke/TIA patients found that elevated sST2 levels independently predicted atrial fibrillation detection after stroke (AFDAS), with sST2 showing superior predictive value (AUC 0.815) compared to conventional risk factors. Adding sST2 to a conventional risk model significantly improved prediction accuracy for AFDAS in acute stroke patients.

Bimanual Arm Trainer versus Traditional Occupational Therapy for Upper Extremity Function After Stroke

A clinical trial compared the effectiveness of the Bimanual Arm Trainer device with standard occupational therapy in 27 stroke patients with upper extremity dysfunction. Both treatment groups showed significant improvements in arm function, with no statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups, suggesting device-assisted therapy may provide comparable benefits to traditional therapy.

Prevalence of Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack Populations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This systematic review synthesizes evidence from four studies to estimate the prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in stroke and TIA patients, finding a pooled prevalence of 0.96% overall and 2.89% in large artery atherosclerosis strokes. The authors acknowledge significant heterogeneity between studies and conclude that while evidence suggests FH may be relevant to cerebrovascular disease beyond cardiology, more research is needed for firm quantitative conclusions.

Vascular Eagle Syndrome Presenting with Cervical Hematoma and Acute Ischemic Stroke with Airway Compromise

This case describes a 26-year-old woman with Eagle syndrome (elongated styloid process) who developed a life-threatening hemorrhagic complication involving an aneurysmal dilatation of the carotid artery, resulting in cervical hematoma with airway compromise and acute ischemic stroke. The patient required emergency airway management and demonstrated the severe vascular consequences possible when the styloid process compresses or injures adjacent blood vessels.
