Functional Neurological Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Clinical and Mechanistic Overlap

This narrative review examines the potential overlap between functional neurological disorder (FND) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), conditions historically underrecognized but increasingly understood to co-occur with shared sensory, motor, and psychiatric symptoms. The authors synthesize evidence from multiple databases and propose that theoretical models like Bayesian brain theory and the tripartite model of autism may illuminate the mechanistic intersection between these two conditions.
