Is the ADHD Epidemic About to Explode? Medicalization, Pharmacotherapy, and Institutional Context in Hungary

This position paper critically examines the social, clinical, and institutional dimensions of ADHD diagnosis and treatment in Hungary, analyzing how epidemiological discrepancies, DSM-5 diagnostic ambiguities, and economic/institutional pressures contribute to diagnostic expansion. The author discusses both benefits and risks of methylphenidate and atomoxetine while recommending stricter prescribing controls, specialized centers for severe cases, and strengthened psychosocial interventions.
