Ergothioneine Metabolism as a Plasma Biomarker of Cognitive Resilience in Older Adults with Alzheimer's Amyloid Pathology

This study examined whether plasma levels of ergothioneine and its metabolite hercynine correlate with resistance to cognitive decline in older dementia-free individuals with Alzheimer's amyloid pathology. Higher ergothioneine metabolism (HC:ET ratio) attenuated the relationship between amyloid biomarkers and cognitive decline, suggesting ergothioneine's potential neuroprotective role warrants further investigation.
