Epidemiology, Genetics, Neuroimaging, and Treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder: Comparing Overall and Performance-Only Presentations

This narrative review examines social anxiety disorder (SAD) across two presentations: overall SAD (5-13% prevalence) and performance-only SAD (0.3-0.7% prevalence), comparing their epidemiology, genetic factors, brain imaging patterns, and clinical outcomes. Performance-only SAD emerges later, affects fewer comorbidities, and shows more localized neural responses compared to overall SAD, which involves broader fronto-limbic network alterations and greater genetic influence.
