Genetic Predisposition to Celiac Disease in Persons with Down Syndrome in Northwestern Mexico

This study examined HLA genetic markers and antibody profiles associated with celiac disease in 86 individuals with Down syndrome, finding nearly universal carriage of celiac disease risk alleles (98.8%) and about 4.6% with serological evidence of active celiac disease. The findings support enhanced screening and monitoring protocols for celiac disease in individuals with Down syndrome due to their significantly elevated autoimmune disease risk.
