Iron Overload and Ferroptosis: A Potential Mechanism in Early Alzheimer's Disease in Down Syndrome

USC researchers identified excessive iron accumulation in the brains of individuals with Down syndrome and early-onset Alzheimer's disease, with levels approximately double those in controls. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death pathway, appears to drive neurodegeneration particularly in vulnerable brain regions.
