Medication Prescribing Patterns in Primary Care for People with Intellectual Disabilities: Anti-seizure Medications, Laxatives, and Antipsychotics
This study analyzed prescription records from a primary care dataset in Cornwall examining the prevalence of laxative, anti-seizure medication, and antipsychotic use among 3,189 people with intellectual disabilities. Findings show nearly 45% of those on anti-seizure medications also received laxatives, with higher rates in older patients, suggesting potential medication-related constipation or inadequate bowel management in this vulnerable population.
