Mortality Patterns in Adults with Down Syndrome and Alzheimer's Disease: Analyzing Cause-of-Death Classification Gaps

This epidemiological study analyzed U.S. mortality data from 2005–2019 to compare cause-of-death comorbidity patterns between adults with and without Down syndrome who had Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The research revealed that standard cause-of-death classification schemes mask important comorbidities in individuals with Down syndrome, including choking-related deaths, seizures, and hypothyroidism, and recommends changes to classification systems to address data inequities.
