Mortality in People with ADHD: Analysis of Risk Mechanisms Using Two U.S. Prospective Cohort Studies
This large prospective study of over 52,000 U.S. adults found that people with ADHD had significantly elevated mortality risk (58% higher) over approximately 8 years of follow-up. Comorbid depression and anxiety symptoms accounted for the majority of excess mortality risk, while socioeconomic disadvantage and lifestyle factors played smaller roles, suggesting psychological distress is a key mechanism linking ADHD to mortality.
